Can winners be grumpy?
Dudes. Almost 1000 comments. That's simply nuts!!! It's really a testament to the talent behind Lorna's Laces - they make it just right, every time!
The story behind the Grumperina colorway is as follows: the stripey socks came first. With this specific project in mind, I selected navy, natural, lilac, and blackberry LL Shepherd Sock from my pile of Lorna's Laces leftovers.

The creative mind behind Lorna's Laces, Beth Casey, mentioned that if my chosen colors worked well together, it might be fun to blend them into a special colorway! I was floored and flattered by this suggestion, and of course agreed. Next, Linda was added into the mix, and just a few short weeks later, the yarn was all dyed!
I don't expect this colorway to form stripes when knit up; certainly not the nice, even ones like when knitting a "stacked spiral." The repeats of each color are quite short, enough for just a handful of stitches. But as I mentioned a little while ago Cat Bordhi's New Pathways for Sock Knitters is full of patterns for just this type of colorway, so that's where I'll turn when I knit up my grumpy skeins ;).
And which pattern will you use? I know there aren't terribly many of you... at the moment the Grumperina colorway is all sold out. But it will be back in stock shortly! E-mail Linda (birdsnyarn at aol dot com) to be placed on the waitlist.
I'm on the waitlist, too, you know. When I saw the number of readers entering a raffle for only two skeins of yarn, it just didn't sit well with me. So I decided to increase the prize - 5 readers will each receive two skeins of Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock in Grumperina! A total of 10 skeins to be given away! The catch? I'm waiting for the yarn to be dyed, so the prizes won't be delivered immediately.
The winners... I know you've been waiting for this!
- Xana!
- Karen! (the one whose yahoo e-mail address contains "2001")
- Jessie B., who promises to live up to the yarn's grumpiness!
- Elisabeth!
- Jennifer! (the one who has a yahoo.ca e-mail address)
Congratulations, ladies! I'll be in touch shortly!
Seeing so many of you inquire about the future of my MagKnits patterns has me beaming and flustered all at once. I'm flattered that you want the patterns in your libraries (awww, shucks!), but the development was abrupt and unannounced, and I find myself scrambling in a panic as I cobble something together for you. I want to help, and to help quickly, but life: it just keeps moving!
Jaywalker is now available as a free pdf download on Ravelry (or drop me a line if you'd like a copy via e-mail). Odessa and the other patterns will follow shortly - also free, also pdf, also on Ravelry or by e-mail. I just don't know exactly when. I was completely caught off guard, and find myself digging through ancient hard drives and yellowing papers to get everything together for you. My apologies.
Comments
I am almost positive that I printed off a copy of Odessa. If you can't find yours, let me know and I will scan it and send it to you (I don't trust myself to transcribe it!)
thank you for putting them up on Rav. I'm sure we all will be able to wait for them.
You are a hub in the huge circle of the knitting universe.
You did a great job with the Jaywalker pattern. I much prefer it now than how it printed from Magknits. Thanks! :)
Thanks for your generosity in offering lots more prizes, as well as your work in getting your patterns up again. I know you know it, but knitters are tops!
I don't think you should apologize for being caught off guard -- you had zero notice and people instantly clamoring at you for those patterns, after all. It's amazing you got the Jaywalker pattern up so quickly. So please -- no apologies necessary! :)
Thank you for making your patterns available. I finished my Odessa the day before it disappeared (phew). Just in the nick of time.
Thanks for making the patterns available on Ravelry. I went to print off another copy of the Jaywalkers pattern only to discover the demise of Magknits. I appreciate that you're willing to dig out the old copies so the patterns will still be available to us.
I am so happy and excited and thankful that you are putting up your patterns on Ravelry. I haven't get a chance to knit up all your patterns that I queued as I am in the last crunch of wedding planning, and I'm sure you know what it's like. So THANK YOU!
Thanks a lot for making your patterns available! I have yet to knit one, but some of them are on my to-knit list, so I really appreciate it.
I hadn't known about Magknits, and I know there were things on there I meant to knit. Archive.org has been somewhat helpful.
Gotta to agree with Angie. Couldn't have said it better.
Rats--I can't believe another Karen won the skein. I saw the name and got so excited.
Now I have to get on the waiting list.
I have a printout of Picovoli that I can scan and send if you need it. It's got some notes in the margins, but I can probably get rid of them and make a clean copy. I've knit a few of them...that's my staple summer top.
If you search for the pattern on Google, it should still come up as a cached document (hit "cached" at the bottom of the link). You can then save it from that source if you don't feel like sifting through tons of papers and old hard drives!
Not at all surprised by the number of entries. Didn't you know, YOU ARE A STAR! Congrats to the winners,
So happy your patterns will still be available, and easily, through Ravelry. Thanks for the tip on the Grumpy yarn, too. I got mine in the mail today, they shipped sooo fast!
I guess I should count myself lucky! I followed your link to Birds 'n' Yarn and snagged 2 skeins of Grumperina :)
I do have your blog syndicated so it pops into my friends page on Live Journal as soon as you post and I refresh my page (which is several times a day)...but still!!
She's shipping it on Friday...I can't wait to get it! I have a few other LL skeins and I love it.
I see Bristol already mentioned what I was going to - I found the cached version of Odessa this morning after I heard about Magknits going off-line. It didn't come up with the pictures but the text was all there.
I hadn't heard about the demise of Magknits but I'm so glad to hear that Jaywalkers is available on Ravelry - I've had that wonderful pattern in mind for forever and I will knit it one day soon! Thanks for sorting these patterns out.
I hope you'll be able to reconstruct the picovol-pattern too... I've knit one and promised my mother one, but I lost the pattern in a diskcrash :(
*repeats the cache information*
To get the pictures if you've lost them, you can go to something like http://www.archive.org and put in the original magknit address for the pattern (still available in google). It doesn't always work first time, but it should after a while get you the pictures.
I can't believe I've won. Thinking of a 3rd Jaywalker! Thank you for your generosity!
Thank you for making your patterns available! I just started my first Jaywalkers on Monday - was coventing my copy of the pattern.
Lovely knit! And your yarn is nice too. :)
It's a shame about MagKnits. You're wonderful for making your patterns available on Ravelry.
yes, magknits' demise was rather abrupt wasn't it. and i'm disappointed that i didn't win. sure you put my name in the hat? ;)
I'm new to sock knitting - since Christmas, but when I saw that colorway, I started to order it, then walked away. I have a lot of sock yarn in my stash and it's only my waiting for the school bus knitting. But I couldn't stop thinking about it... so I came back and I already have it! It's beautiful. I have no idea what pattern I'll use since I've only made two so far. I can't wait to hear suggestions.
I believe that I have Odessa saved as a pdf...
Why, yes, yes I do. I saved it that way right off of Magknits. Perhaps there is something you can do with the file, if you want it.
I think it is really great how quickly you responded to the magknits mess!
Thanks for sharing them on ravelry... You can always find the pattern by googling magknits and the pattern... Then use the cached option
Glad to see your patterns will continue post-Magknits.
Anyone who didn't win the Grumperina colorway has another chance on my blog! Linda has generously donated another pair of skeins in support of my raffle to raise money for cancer research. Any amount donated gets a chance to win!
Congrats to all the winners! And how very generous, Mrs. Grumperina, that you expanded the prizes!! Providing lost pattern, yarn treats, great lessons in knitting....you are a wonder! Thank You!
CONGRATS!!!!
I am sure that we all have at least a little patience (or will pretend ;-) to wait while you live your normal, non-knitting life. I will be downloading them from ravelry when i get there in my queue. thanks a million!
Thanks for taking the time to make those patterns available. It's much appreciated.
I am so glad you are posting them on Rav! Jaywalkers have been on my to-do list for a long time, but I never printed the pattern.
Thanks a bunch!
Thank you SO MUCH for posting the pattern for Jaywalker on Ravelry. I'm off to toss it into my notebook now. I've wanted to make it for a while. :)
Magknits was sad. But your winners i am sure are jumping with joy! Congrats to them!
Thanks for making your patterns available to us, as you get to them. I recently finished my first jaywalker, and giving a sweater a bit of time before going back to the second jaywalker. It is a great pattern.
I believe a couple of others may have mentioned this already, but I have Picovoli and Odessa saved as word files, minus the pictures, if it would help.
That you so much for putting your patterns back out there and working so hard to do so!
Dude! Do NOT apologize for not having your patterns ready to go at a moment's notice. I don't have much of an opinion on the whole MagKnits debacle other than that they owe you and all the other designers an enormous apology for putting you in this position. Nobody needs to start their Odessa or Picovoli right this second, and I hope everyone emailing you remembers that.
Thanks for taking the time to make the patterns available at all. I was sad that I might not get a chance to make another pair of Jaywalkers (my rabbit ate my last copy!).
Yea!! I can't believe I won! (I'm sorry other Karen, but I'm sure you'll win next time!) Thanks so much! I look forward to hearing from you!
Thank you so much for getting Jaywalkers up on Ravelry. That was very fast. Don't apologize about not getting the others up -- it's not your fault they're no longer published!
Magknits belly up? Wow, who would have thought and no notice? Incredible. No need for apologies Kathy. Thanks for making your patterns available on Ravelry.
Knotions magazine has also offered to host any pattern previously on Magknits (http://www.knotionsmag.com/Default.aspx?tabid=54&EntryID=11). There's an e-mail address in the blog entry for more information.
(I'm not connected to Knotted other than as a reader - just offering another place in addition to Ravelry)
I am so glad to hear that your patterns will be available!
Sorry to hear about Magknits, but I am excited because the Grumperina yarn that I ordered on Monday showed up on Wednesday. Can't wait to wind it and get started.
I agree with Angie in the comments - you are a hub!
I just wanted to chime in here as well as on Ravelry to thank you for making your patterns available. I think a lot of us were blindsided when MagKnits went poof! Thanks again.
That SUCKS about Magknits.com! THere were a few patterns I had never printed out because of printer issues; I don't know who the designers were, or even the 'real' names of the patterns (a cobwebby shrug from last summer?). Even the pattern of Picovoli that I printed off was messed up....
Oh, good. I was mugged in a yarn shop last weekend by some amazing organic cotton yarn, which leapt off the shelf and demanded to be made into a little cap-sleeve tee. So I came here for the link to Picovoli yesterday, only to discover that I was just two days too late!
Good to know you're on the case; I will look again when you've had a chance to deal with the situation.
I was so surprised that magknits is no longer. I was even more surprised that they did not notify anyone of this. I was on their email list and I would have thought that they would have put out a notice...
Too bad as there were many good patterns there.
Don't fret. People will wait.
Maybe you could put out an APB on Ravelry for anyone who may have saved copies.
Hey Kathy, I know I've got a printout of Odessa at home, and possibly as a PDF - I'm happy to scan it in and email to you/email the PDF if you'd like. Might save the time of digging through old drives looking for a tech-edited copy. Thanks for offering them after the Magknits demise! =)
It's sad about Magknits, but given the amount of work she was putting in and the amount of return I can certainly sympathize with her decision.
I love your patterns (though I'll admit that I have only finished Odessa, but I finished that one multiple times), so I'm grateful that you are making them available.
1000 comments, that's amazing! Guess there are a lot of us lurkers out there - I always check your blog, it's one of my favourites :)
YAY! I just got my 2 skeins of your colorway in the mail today. They are gorgeous!!! I'm going to ball them up right after work and get a pair of socks started immediately. Thanks for such a beautiful colorway.
Now I'm not grumpy at all! Thanks so much for being so generous! For some reason I've never knit socks, but I think this must be a message from the universe that it's time!
Congrats to all the winners! 1000 plus comments? (whoa!) Of course it's a DREAMY colorway, so why wouldn't we ALL want it? lol (Lorna's Laces to boot)
That MagKnits thing was TOO sudden, I understand the issues and all, but it would have been nice for a tiny head's up. Some of us could have done some screen prints to pdf or copy and paste - something - anything - sad
Thanks for offering your patterns -- now I HAVE to make some Jaywalkers!
I can hardly believe it - might I actually be "the" Jennifer with a yahoo.ca address? There are undoubtedly others. But if I am one of the winners (Thanks for increasing the number of prizes - I just squeaked in at number 5!), then please include a Jaywalker pattern for me to try out. No worries about the dyeing lag time, I'm halfway through the first sock of another pair and just started a baby sweater for a friend who's due in a month, so I'll be busy until for a bit yet. Thanks again!
I just want to thank you for Odessa. I made it (with beads) for my now-ex-gf, and it turned out so beautifully that I didn't mind the ex-ness of it all (grin).
I do hope to make it again some day for someone else. Lovely pattern.
I got my hands on a couple of skeins of the Grumperina colorway. I'm coveting it right now. Not sure which sock pattern I'll do just quite yet. I'm still admiring it. You were right about the service Bird 'n Yarn. So quick and efficient!
Oh thank goodness! And thank YOU for doing that for us. I was both shocked and disappointed when I found out that Magknits had shut down. I have many patterns from that site queued. The should have at least informed the designers so that you could make other arrangements.
Thank you for your hard work to get those patterns back up! I have seen comments, posts and emails all over the place bemoaning the disappearance of the Jaywalkers in particular... the knitting community can breathe a sigh of relief. :)
Congrats to the winners (grudgingly)!!!
And take you time on the patterns. It's not like we all don't have 2578993125 WIPs/in our queue/UFOs to work on while we wait.
That's super nice of you to up the prizes too.
Thanks for all you do (sounds like a Bud-Lite commercial!)! Love the yarn!
Thanks so much for making your patterns available on Ravelry. We do appreciate it!
Waaaaahhhh! I want to buy my LL Grumperina colorway NOW! (Please excuse hissy fit. I will stop shouting, I promise.) It is gorgeous, and a fitting tribute to a sock knitter/sock pattern writer extrodinaire! Not surprised it sold out fast--love the colors.
Love the grumperina yarn and thanks for replying to my email about Odessa.
Just another thank you for putting Jaywalker on Ravelry. It's "nice" to know that the designers were caught as much off guard as the readers!
Thank you so much for getting the Jaywalker pattern up so quickly. I've only ever knit the pattern once, and don't have any immediate plans to knit it again, but I felt sort of lost without it. My Jaywalkers were the first socks I ever knit, and I appreciate you taking the time to make it, and all your other patterns, available again.
Thanks for making your patterns available on Ravelry. And congratulations to all of the "grumpy" winners! =)
It's really not for you to apologize about not having your patterns ready to download after the surprise end of magnkits (and I do think the creator of magnkits could have given some notice to her readers, and also to the authors of the patterns, so everyone could save theirs, and find another way to share them). She (or they) could also have kept the website for a month or so, or have made a fundraising pledge, or something.
I don't really apreciate the way it has been done. But I think the people who had submitted patterns to magknits are probably way more shocked than I am by all this.
So, thank you for sharing Jaywalker through Ravelry, and also for taking so much pain to be able to share your other patterns with us.
And thank you also for being so generous to order 8 more skeins of that lovely colourway, so there would be more winners!
Kinda sad and shocking about MagKnits. I really liked them. But kudos to you for making the patterns available through Ravelry. I think we your loyal readers understand the situation, and I hope no one is being impatient with you. You said it best, "life: it just keeps moving." We just have to move with it. :)
Here is another explanation of knitting in spirals. I tried this but it wasn't my cup of tea.
Even if you don't have a copy of the patterns you can go to the wayback machine site on the internet and get a copy you can start with.
Barring that, for recent patterns, you can do a Google search and select the cached search not the current search.
Neither of those will produce a perfect copy but they're better than nothing and a good starting point.
I asked to be put on the wait list. I think it would be fun to do my second pair of Jaywalkers with the new colorway.
Thank you for re-releasing all of your patterns. I appreciate the work you are putting into that. I've knit two pairs of Jaywalkers, and I have more of your patterns in my queue because I love your style.
Thanks for making that possible.
i know comments are closed and the contest is over but i really wanted to congratulate you on getting a lorna's laces colorway named after you! that is soooo exciting. can't wait to purchase one and wear it with pride. thanks for all the pattern info.
Kathy don't worry about the time it takes to put up your fantastic patterns, many of us will wait as long as it takes. Thanks so much for offering them free via Ravelry download!! I'm sorry to see Magknits go and I'm sad to hear how it came about as well as the fact that the designers were not given any advanced notice at all. Just so you know if you were to even put them out for a price or by donation I would pay or donate monies because you put a lot of hard work and creativity to offer us knitters your patterns.
I'm working on a pair of Jaywalkers right now and love the pattern. Okay honestly they are in hibernation due to other projects that are time sensitive but I will get back to them soon I swear!
Hi Grumperina - just adding my thanks to all the others. Your designs are too good to lose!
Thank you for putting the Jaywalker pattern onto Ravelry. I've been using it for transatlantic knitting, and after two crossings, the pattern's a bit mangled. Glad that I can have a new copy ready for my next trip.
No need to apologise: I'm frankly surprised that MagKnits couldn't send you the archived page.
~x~

Thanks so much for working to make your patterns available again!
